Ice MAPs:
MA research concerning climate change, water sustainability and drawing processes. The research considers the physical properties of ice when used as a material in art, alongside the connotations to climate implied in this material.
The 2 year MA has centered around the development of a process-based drawing method. Using Ice as a drawing material, and sourcing water for the ice in sustainable methods.

Above: Live Ice Maps. Creating an impression to capture ice as it melts. A time based drawing which takes around 24 hours. The water used in this example was sourced from Burbage Brook in Sheffield, a natural presence of gritstone in the area colours the water and stains the cloth as the ice melts.

looks to explore a visual, tactile method of engaging a public audience with the issues our habitat faces within a changing climate, specifically relating to the melting polar ice and potential risk of increased flooding and retreating coastlines worldwide. |
Participants are invited to sit and work together to build an environment with wooden blocks, which represent the breaking ice sheet. Faced with a small surface area, they must question where will the ice go? How can they solve the puzzle, work together and adapt to the space to produce an effective environment.
